Hello Yarnie!

It's been a month already (can you believe it!?) that we have been open in our new, gorgeous shop space! Thanks so much to all who have popped in so far to say hi, have a browse, and head home to exciting new projects!

Driving to Simon's Town in the mornings (especially in the early mornings as pictured below of the view dropping into Simon's Town via Redhill) has been SUCH a treat: the drive alongside the sea from Fish Hoek side is just as beautiful.

Yesterday morning was especially wonderful as I spotted a small humpback whale moving rather swiftly in the direction of Simon's Town, so close it was just beyond the kelp! I'll bet there are very few places in the world where one can see whales on the way to a shop full of yarn! We are feeling very blessed!

BLUE!

Jubilee House has undergone a colour change to blue on her façade in the last week so we are now easier to spot along Saint George's Street as you drive along.

If parking is illusive, take the first left after the square - there's usually a spot at the Yacht Club parking area which is a quick walk up to Jubilee Square and across to our yarnie haven.

We look forward to your visit!

RECOMMENDAUDIO BOOKS FOR THOSE WITH BUSY HANDS:

It is rare that I have time to enjoy a physical book any more as my hands are usually full of knitting / crochet weaving etc! I love books and stories and found a solution to my book cravings a number of years ago in my subscription to Audible.

Credits too expensive? Here's a great tip! I have a 'Silver' account which gives me a credit every 2nd month for affordability: Sign up and message the chat bubble person to arrange this for yourself if you too would like to enjoy books + crafting that prevents holding a book! Subscribers often have access to great sales where books in one's wish-list are marked down to a few dollars... I recently aquired a delightful book:

"A Stash of One's Own" by Clara Parkes

Besides the breathtaking views, driving to and from Simon's Town has been additionally delightful because I have been listening to the short stories in this book to keep me company.

No matter how big or small your 'stash' or your philosophy around yarn acquisition and/or use, there are wonderful anecdotes in the stories by those that contributed to this book -authors, designers and familiar names in our greater yarnie world.

Summer Yarns Spotlight:

It is still rather chilly in Cape Town, but we have had so many customers looking to our Summer weight and warmer weather fibre yarns! Here are a few delicious options to ponder for your next project/s:

ROSARIOS4
Principe Royal

Príncipe Real yarn is a composed of linen, cotton and natural silk. What a lovely combination for lighter, Summer knit and crochet projects!

NURTURING FIBRES
Eco-Cotton

One of our most popular yarns, and for such good reason! Carle's colourways are so beautiful! Choose this yarn for Summer and baby knits!

YELLOW COTTAGE
Hand-painted cotton

These colours pop! Various dying techniques have been used, from speckles, colour waves and gradients. Each skein is a work of art!

NEW: Manos del Uruguay:

CARDO

Cardo is a chunky 4 ply yarn, made of 100% non-superwash Uruguayan Corriedale wool. We love this wool for its long and strong staple that has a lot of shine and crimp. This gives this yarn excellent stitch definition and a knitted fabric that will retain its shape very well.

We frequently receive requests for non-superwash wool, so here's your chance to get your hands on some, in such beautiful colourways! Whether it's that chunky hat you've been dreaming of... a cowl or even a luxurious bag, this yarn is sure to delight you!

Fairmount Fibres (the US distributor of Manos) has a pattern collection on Ravelry for Cardo.

Manos del Uruguay has a FREE pattern for the Pitanga Hat by Luciana Lopez on their website - It is the pattern that I am itching to cast on.... I think "Fjord" and "Putty" will be my cast on choice!

PITANGA HAT by Luciana Lopez:

MARLA

Marla is created by hand dyeing two different multi color skeins, and then twisting them into one unique marled yarn. This yarn has a 'handspun' look.

If you've been dreaming about getting your hands on a great yarn for patterns such as Andrea Mowry's "The Shift" / "The NightShift" /

The Cygnus Cowl by Meredith Collins is a FREE pattern which uses 1 skein of Marla, paired with a Semi-Solid - Have a look at our Knotty Habit 3ply DK or LilyRose Dyeworks Pip DK (new colours coming soon!
We are also excited to swatch a pairing with Marla and Rosarios4 Balada : there are plenty of lovely semi-solids in this beautiful wool/silk blend yarn!

Check out the "Alpine Bloom Hat"
by Caitlin Hunter projects that others have knitted with Marla! ...Who's up for a KAL?!.

Knit & Craft Fridays

Every Friday from 11am till closing (4pm) you are welcome to join us with your WIP (work in progress)!

It's been so much fun to welcome our customers to knit, crochet and craft with us in the new shop space -- We have an umbrella on the balcony and on warm days it gets nice and toasty, so be sure to bring your shades and sun hat!

From next week, you will also be able to visit Jellyfish Simon's Town who are currently moving in downstairs.

Packing up those Winter Woolies...

As Spring peeks it's head through the rain clouds here in Cape Town, our fields are finally in bloom and there is a promise of a gloriously warmer time after braving our record breaking rainfall of this past Winter!

Spring cleaning: Good yarnie housekeeping:
No matter how clean the home and/or careful we are, we are all at risk of losing our precious yarn and wearables to fine fibre eating moths and other pests. I keep my wooly wearables sealed in airtight bags over the Summer. Similarly, my yarn collection is also stored in airtight bags...This way, if one bag does get infected by moths or similar, at least the rest of my stash will be protected!

Natural alternatives to moth balls, such as cedar blocks (sand them a little after each season to strengthen the scent) or lavender-scented sachets / soap, mint leaves, or neem oil will do the trick to keep the pests far away AND the scent will be beautiful on the unpack for wearing these garments and accessories next Winter.

As always, happy yarn and fibre crafting!
