Welcome to the Lily Rose CAL, by Liesl Kleu for Natural Yarns.

We will be releasing the instructions over the course of lockdown, starting on Wednesday 1 April 2020.

This cushion cover was inspired by a favorite painting by John Singer Sargent, well known for his evocations of Edwardian-era luxury. Called Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose the painting depicts two small children dressed in white who are lighting paper lanterns as day turns to evening; they are in a garden strewn with pink roses, carnations and tall white lilies. NEXT PART RELEASE: Friday 10 APRIL

Welcome to the fifth part of the Lily Rose CAL!

These last couple of rounds will finish up the front of the cushion,

Special Stitches:

Surface Slip Stitch

The first thing to remember with surface slip stitches is that the yarn is always to the back of your work. Insert your hook through your work at the indicated stitch. Pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through your work,  pull through the loop on your hook, completing your slip stitch.

A note about that elusive hidden stitch!

The hidden stitch is, quite simply, the first stitch after a corner space, and is called the hidden stitch as it is normally hidden under the stitches that have been worked into the chain space corner. Always remember to work these stitches, unless told to skip them!

Pattern: Part 5

Round 36 ~ Colour B

Join with a standing DC in any chain 2 corner space from round 35, 1DC, ch2, 2DC into same chain space, 3HDC into each of the next 3 chain 3 spaces, skip the hidden stitch and 1 HDC in each of the next 17 sts, 1 DC in the next 11 sts, 1 HDC in the next 18 sts, 3HDC into each of the next 3 chain 3 spaces.*2DC, ch2, 2DC into same chain space, 3HDC into each of the next 3 chain 3 spaces, skip the hidden stitch and 1 HDC in each of the next 17 sts, 1 DC in the next 11 sts, 1 HDC in the next 18 sts, 3HDC into each of the next 3 chain 3 spaces.* repeat *-* until end of round. Round 37 ~ Colour B

Join with a standing SC in any chain 2 corner space, 1SC, ch2, 2SC into same chain space, 1SC in each of the next 68 sts.*2SC, ch2, 2SC into same chain space, 1SC in each of the next 68 sts.* repeat *-* until end of round. Join with a slip stitch to the 1st SC, pull yarn through to finish. [Count: 72 SC per side]

Round 38 ~ Colour E

Join with a standing SC in any chain 2 corner space, 1SC, ch2, 2SC into same chain space, 1SC in each of the next 72 sts.*2SC, ch2, 2SC into same chain space, 1SC in each of the next 72 sts.* repeat *-* until end of round. Join with a slip stitch to the 1st SC, pull yarn through to finish. [Count: 76 SC per side]

Join with a slip stitch to the 1st HDC, pull yarn through to finish. [Count: 82 DC per side]

Round 42 ~ Colour E

Join with a standing SC in any stitch, chain 2, SC into same stitch, skip 1 * SC, Ch2, SC  into same stitch, skip 1.* Repeat *-* until end, slip stitch to first SC, pull yarn though and cut to finish.

Surface slip stitch around the DC posts on round 40 – you can omit this part if you want to, but I think it adds a bit of interest, and helps to stabilise the last round and make the cover  little more sturdy.

Once again, sew those pesky ends in…at this point you can block the cover, although I must admit that I am a little lazy here. My feeling is that it is a cover, and as such will be stretched when the pad is inserted, so any wonkiness will be corrected here!

Next week we will begin the back of the cover, but if you are happy to stop here, then you can happily stitch a fabric backing to the cover!

Look out for the release of the following set of rounds on our Facebook / Instagram feeds!

Making Up

It is important to remember that the back and front of the cover are not the same size, and do not have the same amount of stitches. The front has more stitches, and is slightly bigger, so you will need to do a bit of wiggling.

Place front and back together, right sides facing out. Whip stitch the back to the front using the back loops from round 41 of the front. Work the additional stitches on the front into the chin 2 space from your last round of the back – this gives you nice puffy round edges.
