*Please ensure that you purchase enough yarn to complete your project!

Cardo is a chunky 4 ply yarn, made of 100% non-superwash Uruguayan Corriedale wool. We love this wool for its long and strong staple that has a lot of shine and crimp, which gives the yarn excellent stitch definition and a knitted fabric that will retain its shape very well.
Cardo is hand dyed by women artisans in Manos cooperatives in Uruguay’s countryside.
*Please note that every effort has been made to represent the colour of this yarn accurately, but that there may be reasonable differences between your screen view & the actual yarn.

About Manos del Uruguay:

Manos del Uruguay was born in 1968 to improve the quality of life of Uruguay’s rural women by using handcraft skills passed down through generations, using the raw material they had at hand: wool.

This not only gives women jobs, but independence, a connection to roots and connections and an opportunity to support their family and community.

All of Manos del Uruguay’s yarns are hand dyed. The artisans use big pots heated by wood kettles, dyeing in small batches creating wonderful colors. Our yarns colors are bright and wild, full of nuances and variations. No two skeins are the same, each one is unique, a testimony of a particular moment. Keeping the traditional hand spinning skills alive is very important for us and it allows us to create unique, beautiful yarns.

Each skein of yarn has a tag with the artisan signature and the name of the small countryside village where their cooperative, one of 12, is located.

Manos del Urutuay is a memeber of the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation) since 2009, which supports producers and seeks greater equity in internatinoal trade.
